The apparatus has been used by many investigators to evaluate analgesic activity in animal experiments by measuring drug-induced changes in the sensitivity of mice or rats to heat stress applied to their tails. The test is very useful for discriminating between centrally acting morphine-like analgesics and non-opiate analgesics. Mice are placed into cages leaving the tail exposed. A light beam is focused to the proximal third of the tail. Within a few seconds the animal flicks the tail aside or tries to escape. The time until this reaction occurs is measured.

این تست برای بررسی تاثیرداروها برروی حساسیت به محرک دردزای گرمایی و نیز پاسخ‌های حیوان به محرک دردزا مورد استفاده قرار می‌گیرد. به طور کلی، محرک گرمایی برروی دم حیوان اعمال می‌گردد و وقتی حیوان احساس ناراحتی کند به طور ناگهانی دم خود را تکان می‌دهد. مدت زمانی که طول می‌کشد تا حیوان واکنش نشان داده و دم خود را تکان دهد به عنوان ایندکسی از حساسیت حیوان به درد در نظر گرفته می‌شود.

در این تست بر خلاف Hot plate، می‌توان آزمایش را چندین با روی هر حیوان تکرار کرد. (با این شرط که بین هر بار تکرار تست، استراحت 5 دقیقه‌ای به حیوان داده شود). داده‌ها زمانی معتبر هستند که حیوان حین انجام آزمایش بدون حرکت و آرام باشد از این رو از Holder و یا قفس استفاده می‌شود.
